
The greats have played there and you can almost feel there presence. Labine entertained the crowd by dancing and the idea of the go-go dancer was born. The Whisky A Go Go, or the Whisky for short, made a name for itself starting with the Doors, who had a residency there in 1966. Was so excited to be at the Whiskey a GoGo to see a local band make their debut there. On August 21, The Doors are fired when Morrison misses the first show entirely (not for the first time) and although the band drags him back from his hotel for the second, he is not in a state to perform. A DJ named Joanie Labine (the first DJ at The Whisky) played records in a booth that was suspended to the right of the stage in between Johnny Rivers’ sets. 15, 1964 with a concert by Johnny Rivers. A franchise was opened in 1966 on M Street in the Georgetown section of Washington, D.C., by restaurateur Jacques Vivien. It has been called the first real American discothèque. They typically performed two sets per night. In 1958, the first Whisky a Go Go in the United States opened in Chicago, Illinois, on the corner of Rush and Chestnut streets. “I saw Cream at the Pac Center, and Zeppelin at the Whisky, and snuck backstage for the Who at the Shrine. The world-famous Whisky a Go Go opened on Jan. The Doors begin their run as the house band at The Whisky a Go Go opening for every group to play there from May 23 to August 21, 1966. In the early days of the Whisky, you'd see Go-Go dancers and live acts like Johnny Rivers, who got his start there. “I mean what a time to be alive if you loved music,” an older Daisy recalls for a documentary in the show. It’s 1968, and precocious 15-year-old Margaret-who’ll soon rechristen herself “Daisy”-slips out of her parents’ midcentury-modern house and through the stage door of the 1923 Art Deco building on one of the concert venue’s fabled nights when both the Byrds and the Doors were on the bill. So it’s not surprising that within the first five minutes of Daisy Jones & The Six-Prime Video’s adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s 2019 novel about a fictional ’70s rock band, starring Riley Keough as the titular character-the Whisky makes an appearance. As legend has it, when owner Elmer Valentine opened Whisky in 1964, he hired female DJs to keep the party going between sets. The legendary nightclub located on West Hollywood’s Sunset Strip has been an integral part of rock-and-roll history since the early 1960s.
